The Furutech DeMag Alpha is a demagnetizer that works not only on LPs but also on CDs, DVDs, SACDs, and even cables. There is doubt, of course: a vinyl record is made of vinyl, a material that is not known for its excellent magnetic properties. Optical discs and many cables also do not contain ferromagnetic materials. And even if they did: laser light does not care about any form of magnetism, so what is the influence on a possible magnetic CD?

Pigment

According to Furutech, the cause of magnetization of LPs, at least, lies in the pigment layer applied during the manufacturing of records. This layer contains tiny amounts of ferromagnetic material that becomes magnetized by the rotation of the record. By treating an LP with the DeMag Alpha, a noticeable improvement in sound quality occurs, according to this reviewer at least. The strange thing is that this alleged magnetic field has actually been measured by the Nanotechnology Center in Tokyo, but we have not found a link to the hard independent evidence of this.
