The Klimax Solo 800 is Linn's first passively cooled mono power amplifier. The manufacturer promises exceptional clarity and a power output of 400 Watts at eight Ohms. At two Ohms, the Klimax Solo 899 is capable of delivering 1.2 kilowatts.
The Linn Klimax Solo 800 is a class AB amplifier and therefore requires a "sweet spot" bias current to minimize crossover distortion of the transistor. However, this bias current can be far from ideal throughout the amplifier's lifespan, so the Solo 800 is equipped with the company's Adaptive Bias Control technology. This technique made its debut in Linn's flagship 360 Exakt Integrated Speaker in 2023.
Linn explains that the optimal bias current is dynamically established by measuring, sampling, and digitizing the current supplied to the transistors. This data is passed to an FPGA that calculates the bias corresponding to these measured current levels. It then implements a digital control loop to maintain this measured bias point at the ideal level for each transistor.
The claimed result is that the Klimax Solo 800 ensures that the optimal bias is applied and continuously adjusted to be ideal at any temperature, regardless of volume or demanding dynamic changes in the source material, throughout the product's lifespan.
Furthermore, the internal stages of the Klimax Solo 800, by utilizing Linn's unique combination of digital and analog expertise, have been optimized and linearized to consistently produce exceptionally high performance under all conditions. The analog output stage of the Solo 800 is said to be equipped with only the best available transistors. Linn combines eight pairs in parallel to ensure linearity that surpasses the amplifier's impressive performance. Linn states that this results in the amplifier's output impedance being divided by eight, allowing the Klimax Solo 800 to drive large speakers with difficult loads across the entire audio range without a decrease in performance as the volume is increased. According to the designers, the louder it sounds, the more amazingly controlled it is.
